Updated Scam Losses in Australia (2024)
According to the National Anti-Scam Centre’s 2025 Targeting Scams Report:
- Australians reported 494,732 scams in 2024.
- Total reported losses were $2 billion, a 25.9% decrease from 2023
- Phishing scams remain one of the top five scam types, alongside investment, romance, payment redirection, and remote access scams.

(65+) continue to be disproportionately affected, especially by phishing and remote access scams.
While the most frequently reported contact method in 2024 was email (90,819), only 3,459 people reported losing money. Comparatively, the most reported contact method leading to financial loss was social media and more people lost money in 2024 than 2023. There were 7,724 reports about social media scams with financial loss in 2024, just over the 7,706 reported 2023. Social media scams led to overall losses of $69.5 million (a decrease in overall losses from the $93.5 million in 2023), the median loss being $330. Phone scams had the highest overall losses with $107.2 million reported lost across 2,179 reporters.
Scamwatch data suggests that phone scams tend to lead to higher individual losses, with a median loss of $3,900.
